Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Advocate Spence consults Congress regularly on the subject of collecting child support, and her expertise is evident here. Throughout this book, she counsels readers on how to collect money from parents who will not pay what is required of them by a court of law. Spence makes a clear distinction between the establishment of a child-support court order and its enforcement. She covers obvious topics, such as locating a deadbeat parent and finding a free attorney for representation, but she also considers more obscure but equally important topics, such as locating a parent's hidden assets and modifying existing child-support court orders. In addition, examples of the legal forms needed to collect court-ordered payments are available. Well organized and thorough, this book will help anyone seeking assistance in forcing parents to pay what is legally required of them. Recommended for all public libraries. Former Senator Bill Bradley

" You are obviously well-knowledged in the field of child support enforcement."

Dr. David Jay Lieberman, Author of "Never Be Lied To Again."

"A no-nonsense guide to get the money you deserve. Buy this book and start collecting your child support NOW."

Judye Foy, International VP Community Relations, Parents Without Partners, Inc.

"This book goes to the very heart of the issue of collecting child support. The documentation included for helping parents collect child support is unprecedented. It would take parents many hours of research and frustration just to find the steps for the processes that are included in this book. This alone would make the book worth the purchase price, but the author goes a step further and gives much needed advise on how to work through every step of the process."

What Responsible Parents Need to Know About Collecting Child Support by Simone Spence. Copyright © 2000. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved

The history of child support orders and the enforcement of child support has been an outrage since the day ''family law'' first entered the legal system. Historically, the majority of custodial families have not had court-ordered child support, and those receiving child support orders have rarely been awarded enough money to care for their children properly. Theoretically, child support awards should be sufficient to mimic the same economic advantages a child would have if his or her parents were together as a couple. In addition, once the court has ordered child support, most custodial parents still have a hard time collecting any child support monies. Some families are able to get partial payments, while other families receive no payments at all. Fortunately, not all custodial families experience the economic abuse of child support evasion. The sad truth is, however, that only 25 percent of families that have child support awards ever collect. This book is not written to tag men or non-custodial fathers as deadbeats, although some of them are. It is written for any custodial parent, male or female, who needs help getting financial support for his or her children. Eighty-seven percent of custodial parents are women. The remaining 13 percent are men, grandparents, and others. There are deadbeat dads, and there are deadbeat moms. In some instances both dad and mom are deadbeats. It does not matter what gender the deadbeat parent is. The object of this ball game is to get financial support for the children. That stated, for the sake of simplicity, this book will use male gender pronouns when referring to non-custodial parents and female gender pronouns when referring to custodial parents. Similarly, gender pronouns will be consistently applied to other roles, such as lawyers, caseworkers, and judges.
